To employ such an uncompromising modern Jewish artist on such an important building as 55 Broadway, at a time when fascism and communism were in the ascendant across Europe and Asia, was sure to generate worldwide interest in the new building. Holden was aware that he and Pick would be accused of courting controversy, but maintained, “If I didn’t believe in Epstein we should not wish to employ him. No! We risked publicity but we didn’t seek it.
